what's the longest song you've ever heard?
I think my longest one was Jethro Tull's Thick as a Brick which is 45 minutes (its divided into 2 parts because they couldn't fit the whole thing on one side of a record)
other long songs:
Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence - Dream Theater - 42 minutes
Karn Evil 9 - Emerson, Lake, and Palmer - 30 minutes
Rundtgåing Av Den Transcendentale Egenbetens Støtte - Burzum - 25 minutes
The Odyssey - Symphony X - 24 minutes
Octavarium - Dream Theater - 24 Minutes
Echoes - Pink Floyd - 24 minutes
Atom Heart Mother - Pink Floyd - 24 minutes
A Change of Seasons - Dream Theater - 23 minutes
2112 - Rush - 20 minutes
Black Rose Immortal - Opeth - 20 minutes
The Fountain of Lamneth - Rush - 20 minutes
The Count of Tuscany - Dream Theater - 19 minutes
Close to the Edge - Yes - 18 minutes
Hemispheres - Rush - 18 minutes
Anesthetize - Porcupine Tree - 18 minutes
Dogs - Pink Floyd - 17 minutes
In a Gadda Da Vida - Iron Butterfly - 17 minutes
So, what are the longest songs you've heard?

45 minute song? That's more than what 1-hour cable shows give you nowadays. They give you like 42-43 minutes and the rest of the hour is commercials.
But a few days ago I was listening to a song that was 27 or 28 minutes. Forgot the name. It was on a music site. I didn't listen to the whole thing though. It was good music.

Longest I know of is that one Dream Theater song you mentioned, never listened to it, but I knew it was that long.
Longest I have ever listened to is either Smash by Offspring, One by Metallica, Free Bird by Lynard Skynard, Albaquerque by Wierd Al, or Through the Fire and Flames by Dragonforce

about 2 hours give or take. Technically it was more than 1 song, but each song ran into the other perfectly. Carmina Burana, starts with O fortuna. Lovely piece of music.
Edit- bottom burps. Wrong thread. Now i feel like a fool. My bad. Was meant for longest song lawl at me.
Edit by Diligence109 - I moved your post for you :P

I was trying to remember ... I knew I learned about John Cage (chance music composer) who wrote a retardedly long piece for organ that's still playing today and will for hundreds of years...
then I found an article about it (http://www.john-cage.halberstadt.de/new/index.php?seite=dasprojekt&l=e)
yup. 639 year long piece for organ... still playing today. Chance music (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aleatoric_music) is silly XD
aaaaaaaaaannnnnd music major out.
edit: I haven't heard this song so it doesn't technically qualify for this thread... but I've heard OF it! :P

well i said songs, not pieces of music. there's a difference.
do you know of any musical acts (a band or solo artist) that has a song longer than jethro tull's 45 minute long Thick as a Brick? I read somewhere that Frank Zappa has a 56 minute long song, but idk as i don't listen to him

if we are restricting ourselves strictly to songs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Song) (where a song is a musical composition that has some lyrical vocal component) that Dream Theater piece could easily be one of the longest. Is that Dream Theater piece completely through-composed? Or are there breaks between some of the movements?
I can't think of any completely through-composed operas that would beat Dream Theater's song there outta the box unless there's something by Andrew Lloyd Weber that I'm forgetting (if there were a piece to fit the bill he's the loon that woulda pulled it off, for sure)
Edit: Eps you make this forum for me because I have someone to argue music with, thank you XD
i agree with u on the Andrew Lloyd Weber

well, on the cd, it's separated into tracks...so you can listen to the different sections as separate songs, but it's really meant to be one full song. That's how it's played live, all the way through as a continuous long song.
Wikimedia Error (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Six_Degrees_of_Inner_Turbulence_(song))
jethro tull's is longer though, they only split it in half because records can't hold 45 minutes worth of music. so they put 25 minutes of it on one half, and the other 20 on the other side of the record.

Pink floyd!! Pink floyd have an epicly long song... It lasts the whole of the cd, but, as above, it's split into different tracks. Can't remember which album though. I think it was pink floyd. A really trippy sorta thing

Dark Side of the Moon is sort of like that. Breathe/on the run/time/great gig in the sky flow together like one song.

I don't think that really counts, cuz it's a live version where they just jam for a long time.

Actually, just realized my iTunes imported those Deine Lakaien songs wrong and they are not that long o.o Haven't listened to them in a while so I didn't notice and they seem like the kind of band that would have songs that just went on forever XD But all the other ones are fine o-o;
I'm kind of surprised the Autechre I have doesn't have really long songs... They seem like they'd just go on forever, too. Anyway I only searched for songs longer than 20:00 o.o
Project Blaze
07-31-2010, 12:49 PM
O_o I didn't think about searching for songs. lol Plus I dun really like listening to the same song if they basically just repeat the pattern.. or.. sumthin.. I forgot what that's called.. >_< I know what I'm thinkin' of, but can't find the werd for it. lol So 13 mins for Third Eye is pretty much all I can handle. o_O .. Those faces kinda look like tagz.. XD

Well, I mean, I just made a smart playlist in iTunes for songs longer than 20:00. And didn't include the classical ones because Eps hates them (:P) and a few other songs because of other reasons.
Project Blaze

Ohh. I dun really get how to make a smart playlist, so I just go up to file and go to "New Playlist" to do it manually. XD It too compwikated for meh!!! >_<

No, I know eps, I was just kidding :P (That's what the ":P" face was supposed to mean). And that's why I left the classical out :P
