I hear all these reports like "xbox killer" and cant help but wonder what the full story is. These two must have known each other, or there must be a lot more going on if they can prove it was over an xbox. I would love to see the police report now that the case is over with.

Personally I doubt someone got killed just over the xbox. I would find it more likely if it was a robbery and he picked an easy target with a lot of nice stuff. But somehow ended up botching it and killing the victim.

So now you have a robbery and a looted house. A smart police officer would find clues that an xbox was owned, by the packaging in a closet, game cases or manuals, or an xbox live subscription on the credit card or the cost of the system itself. Then you contact microsoft and if that profile (or maybe even just the hard drive) connects to the internet again you have your suspects ip, and any additional information he uses to setup an account. Or he sells it to someone and the new owner gets a call and they cops find who sold it to him.

Calling the murderer "The Xbox killer" because its the easiest thing to prove stolen may have just been sensationalized by the media.

Keep in mind this is just one of many possible theories I could come up with, as I find it much harder to believe its as simple as, "oh hey they guy has an xbox Ima kill him just for that". =/
