I don't think 2012 had a big impact in people. 2000 was a disgraceful year, on which many people commited suicide... I don't think 2012 will have that kind of impact in any sane person.

But it's not what the Mayans said. They say that the world recycles every 26,000 years or so so their calendar lasts 26,000 years. It just ends in 2012 to be restarted again.

The apocalypse thing was created by some interpreter who thought it meant the end of the world and for some reason it stuck. There are people who are descendants of Mayans who would tell you the apocalypse thing was from outside interpretations.

Gamma ray bursts are happening all the time but it would have to be within a few hundred light years of Earth and it would have to point exactly towards earth which is almost near impossible considering the ray wouldn't be very wide and considering how enormous space is.

What's more likely is a CME killing us all. But I'm still skeptical. If I'm wrong, I guess we'll never know. But if I'm right, I know I won't let some people forget.

I never said that you said it would happen, I was basically adding to what you were saying with some examples of the sizes involved.

And the last part of my post was referring to some of my real life friends who got so pulled into the apocalypse thing. So yeah, I wasn't refuting (or Refutiating as Sarah Palin puts it) what you were saying, it was basically an add on.

But there is a star that's going to go supernova soon, it's called Eta Carinae (my location :)) but it's about 7500 light years away and it's poles aren't pointing towards the earth so it won't hit.

That's the only star that comes to mind. If there is another it's news to me. Unless it's a movie, then nvm.

I read Sci Fi...(brain tired after long day of work) so that's why I was wondering if it was a movie lol. And it's SyFy now anyway...should have read more carefully. I watch Science Channel when I can when they have astronomy stuff on.

The particle accelerator was about the Large Hadron Collider in Geneva. People were afraid it would spawn a black hole but most of those people weren't even scientists that were claiming it. So that died off very quickly especially considering particle colliders have been around for decades (I actually visited one a month ago).

And you're right, Gamma ray bursts are dangerous and real, but I wouldn't call it a threat. GRBs are like laser pointers. The light only goes to that one point unlike a light bulb which spreads the light out to all directions. For a gamma ray burst to be a threat, it would have to be pointed directly to the earth. If it misses our upper atmosphere by an inch, it'll just pass by without harm because it's kind of a one way thing like laser pointers. And we wouldn't even see the light - our satellites may pick up the signal but we will miss it if it misses us.

Also, it would have to be very close to us (cosmologically speaking). If a GRB hits us from a galaxy that's 15 million light years away, even if it's a direct hit, it'll only look like a bright light to us because it wouldn't have that energy required to do any damage.

I'm not an expert on astrophysics or particle physics so what I say isn't "official" - but these things have always interested me so I usually keep myself updated with new info from labs and whatnot.

As it relates to 2012, I'm still a skeptic. I don't think anything will happen and I know the Mayans just wanted the calendar to restart. Maybe people in the year 28012 will wonder what will happen to them like we are now.

My personal understanding of Y2K was pretty much the anti technology people started up a rumor about this saying everything would hit the fan because the computer wouldnt be able to process the turn over.

No one ever said we'd die though. All the "panic" was about was that people didn't know how the computer would process going from 1999 to 2000, and thought it would go to back to the year one, or 1900 or something, and that all the computers in the world would effectively crash.
