Hey everyone, I just have a random question I thought I'd ask.
Here in Queensland there has been extensive flooding over the last few months. In the south east (where I live) we have experienced some of the worst flooding in 37 years. I haven't really watched the news yet today but last night the death toll was 12 with a constantly changing number of people missing (the average is between 55 and 60). A lot of those people will not be found alive and some will never be found at all. The damage will be into the millions.
This is a national disaster. Entire communities are isolated and tens of thousands of people have lost their homes. Many tv stations here have had a rolling coverage of the SE QLD flooding since Monday. Yesterday there was a Australia vs England 20-Twenty cricket game in Melbourne (Victoria). It didn't air here until 11pm because of flood coverage and throughout the game the commentators where mentioning what's happening up here and players were walking around with donation buckets collecting for the flood appeal.
So the entire country is involved in this and I've had two messages from friends in the states asking if I'm okay and if I've been affected where I am and so on (which I do greatly appreciate). So I know it has been covered, but it's made me curious. How much do people overseas know about what's going on here? In a nutshell, I was just wondering what the news coverage of the Queensland and northern New South Wales flooding is like in other countries.

Thanks

There's a fair bit of coverage over here in the UK, I heard about it today off my parents though, shocking news :( Glad you're ok though! Let's hope for a swift recovery to start as soon as possible.

Interesting, thanks. I expect it would have to news world wide, but I was just wondering how much so. It's interesting to compare the way different events in different places are covered in international media.

Thanks for the well wishes, I've never been so glad that my parents decided to buy on top of a hill lol.

Brisbane is expected to peak again this afternoon and then the water will start receding. It's going to take days for the levels to all be back to normal and for power to be restored to a lot of suburbs. And it's gonna be one hell of a clean up. Thanks for the support <3

I heard about it earlier on the news but it was like a 30 second segment.

Glad you're ok tho.

Yeah I heard it's gunna peak and then hopefully recede continuously back to it's original level. I also heard their's a Bull Shark swimming around on the roads :/ Is this true going on your local news/word of mouth stories?

Where are you Linux? Thanks for the gladness <3

I just heard about flooding in Brazil that's apparently killed over 200 people. Kind of brings the differences in government, economy and lifestyle into focus doesn't it? :(

I saw a guy on the news telling a reporter that at Goodna. I'm inclined to call BS, but who knows. Stranger things have happened. There are bull sharks in some rivers, but not upstream. I think they are more around the mouth, near the ocean. And since the flood water is like a torrent going out to sea, I don't think it's likely that a shark would swim against that and end up in Goodna (which is a long way from the mouth of the Brisbane river).
But like I said, stranger things have happened, so who knows?

I'm in NYC. We have several 24/7 news services - I saw it in there today when they were going over the mini blizzard we just had.

Wow, I don't think Australia has any free to air continual news stations.

I think there might be some digital ones, but not every one has digital yet. (If that doesn't make sense, it doesn't matter, I'm really just thinking aloud).

What does itt mean? :azn:

Toowoomba. Yeah, the flooding there was absolutely insane. If you can find a picture or video of what it usually looks like and then look at the footage from Monday, it will blow your mind.

We covered this in crisis and disaster today beyond today i never knew that queensland was such a hot zone for natural hazards honestly.

I know the flooding is so serve that it affected the capital of queens land and reached out to another city Toowba, I didnt spell it right I know but It starts with a "T". And they got hit with a flash Tsunami and its just messy as hell.

And the biggest issue that the people will face is that, that country has some of the most poisonous snakes and other creatures around, so when the flood waters disappear the creatures will come out and play.

Beyond that I have heard nothing about it.

I Do find it interesting that there is something called La nina that is causing all of this I never heard of that.

We've had quite a lot of it on the news here in the UK. Been going on a week and a half - two weeks now?

My Aunty lives on the Gold Coast and it's just reached her in the last couple of days luckily she's unaffected where she is though.
