Looks like a texture pack, if that's what you're talking about.

this isn't a texture pack - there are programs that render the server's world as a 3D object so that you can take screenshots of your world like this one with lighting and textures nicer than the actual game engine can produce. You can't play the game with it looking like this, afaik - you can only export the world as a 3D model.

<I wish our forum had strikethrough tags>I may be wrong - if you can find a screenshot that looks like this and includes the toolbar/HUD I'll be pleasantly surprised.</strikethrough>
EDIT: I found an article for you on how people render their minecraft worlds to make nice looking screenshots (http://www.quora.com/How-do-people-create-beautiful-Minecraft-screenshots). There is no way to make the world look like this in-game.

There are some crazy texture packs, though.

You can make it look like this:

http://img193.imageshack.us/img193/8899/titleeb.png

(LB Photo Realism Pack 256x256 Version 4.0.8 Minecraft Texture Pack (http://www.planetminecraft.com/texture_pack/lb-photo-realism-pack-256x256/))

and like a million other things...

Personally I would honestly not get a texture pack :( I think the simplicity of the graphics adds to the charm that this game has.

For example:

Kotaku, the Gamer’s Guide (http://kotaku.com/#!5724989/why-minecraft-is-so-damn-popular)

It pretty much says the EXACT rant that I'd place here.

That article doesn't have anything to do with texture packs o.o

And I probably won't use any texture packs unless I found one I really liked, but I don't think they are a bad thing for people who want them. In fact, I would go against a lot of what that article says about people loving the "idea" of Minecraft and say that a LOT of the charm of the game (after playing for a while and becoming more and more aware of the limits, for example) is because of the easy ability to add texture packs and mods and extend its value beyond what it originally has. One of the best ways to keep a community playing your game is to be friendly to the modding community.

People love the game so much that they take months of hard work to create additional content, or modify existing content in a new way -- that is what keeps people there, imo. I think a lot of games need to embrace the modding culture more (obviously not mods that provide unfair advantage, etc) and would probably have higher success.

sure it has something to do with texture packs, it explains how such a simple and unadvertised game becomes so popular from its simplicity, and how blockbuster games are actually biting themselves in the ass cause Minecraft proves that you really don't need all the fancy graphics to make an awesome game :)

Yeah, but... it still doesn't have much to do with texture packs - that is an entirely separate issue o.o The game is what it is, and everyone starts out with it that way... but adding different graphics doesn't harm the game; it only creates a different environment (and they themselves fully support and encourage people to make texture mods).

I think the article is arguing something completely different, but anyway :P I still think one of the major saving graces of this game is their friendliness to modders. You can create such a nice, helpful community by allowing people to change the game in their own little ways - it encourages creativity and an active role in a game, rather than a completely passive one o-o

I see your point Muffin, but I still think the link has some connection to what I try to say.

EITHER WAY, pointless debate at rest, I wouldnt say that texture packs HARM the game, not at all, I just think, PERSONALLY, that there's a certain charm to the game with the graphics being so...well...herm...Poor? :p It makes the game quite enjoyable, cause you enjoy Minecraft for what it is, not for what you see, graphics wise.

I guess we're just looking at it from different perspectives ;3

and yus I mean I like the original graphics :P

I just think it's really cool that all these texture packs and mods exist, and the creativity and hard work of the fans :3 Like I said, I probably wouldn't use one myself because I like the way it looks, but it's nice that the options exist

It would be nice if someone took pictures without a texture pack to compare it :)

If it wasn't 20 bucks, I'd get Minecraft.
I used to play a game called "Return to Blockland" and it was Minecraft, but instead of just boxes, they were lego pieces and you could make the piece longer and wider and angle them and such.
You could make some sweet stuff.
And you could mod it! It was free too.
But then they made a new one called Blockland, and it was basically Minecraft. Just legos. There was no angling, no changing the size, just the legos. So I'd say it's similar.
You couldn't mod it though, which made it suck. And it was 10 bucks.

I guess what I'm saying it, Minecraft isn't a great game for it's simplicity, no one cares how simple it is. You could argue that with Doodle Jump as well.
I think it's doing so great because of the modding you can do on the game. I think people really love being able to create their own changes to a game and make it what they really want.
