Specific pieces depend on your computer scale, and type...
I suggest a GeForce graphics card and good internal cooling.
Windows 7, some games coming out soon will require it, and good processor, like I said it all depends...
Edit:
Here's what I have, and it is a dream computer:
GeForce 8800 GTX
Microsoft Windows 7 Enterprise Edition Service Pack 1 (build 7601), 32-bit
2.0 GB RAM
2.2 GHz Performance Rated at: 4.4 GHz CPU Speed
CPU: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor
This came to near $1100 dollars, which is a pretty good deal.

Did I read somewhere that you built your PC yourself/or at least bought the parts separate (and recently)? Cause if so, you didn't really get a very good deal :/

My latest build cost less than that and it's quite a bit better.

Mind sharing? I'm looking at getting a new gaming computer as well. And I know nothing about computers :/

You can find my stuff cheaper now than when I got it of course, but my total was under $1k

GPU: Radeon HD 6850
CPU: AMD Phenom II x4 955 BE
RAM: 4 GB Kingston
HDD: 640 GB WD Black (also a 1TB external)
Case: CM 690 II Adv
PSU: 650W Corsair
Mobo: Asus Evo
Win 7 64 bit

If you ever need help picking out parts or have questions about compatibility or something just ask on the forums. I'll help you, and Linux would no doubt help

I bought it piece by piece, Synge.
But that included the HDs, C, and D. Both near a 1000 GB
Then my amazing casing.
All the lights, vents, :3
That was an estimate for just those pieces though, I am sure it wasn't exact.
