Well the story from metro 2033(its based on a book with the same name)

About 20 years ago(from 2033) a nuclear war destroyed the world. A few thousand people managed do take cover in the moscow metro(which practically are enormous nuclear safe bunkers)

In 2033 the people that managed to survive have been steadily decreased to a few people trapped in this underground world full of monsters and other unexplainable things as well of bandits and other humans.

The book tells us the world down here really good, each station is mostly isolated and adopted their own ideology, while some stations evolved and managed to travel with eachover some others was lost by means unknown.

the game follows Artyom as he tries to save the metro from these mysterious beasts called the dark ones.
