Anybody know how to find affordable game engine?

Friends and I have been shooting a zombie series for fun. Then we started to design a video game for it. We call it Inzombnia same as the webisodes. But the game engine we want is Rage game engine and it costs a lot to license. Any ideas on where we can get affordable one? We want the game to function in an open world. Like Dead Island only set in New York City. Any ideas?

Well im sure any active game engine is out of your range. So perhaps try for something older or maybe even a ps1 game engine I dunno.

There's one I heard that let's you use them for like $200 and if u range high in revenue you have to pay up. Heard about it and forgot the name!

Im pretty sure some friends where making a source based game once, and I dont recall what all you have to pay for to use. Might even be free to use if you are not trying to make money.
