MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - A Bartlett man found thousands of dollars inside an item he bought on eBay.

James Labrecque sold an old safe on eBay for $122.93.

"I made a mistake, you know, that's what it boils down to," said Labrecque. "And it cost me dearly."

Labrecque, an eBay user for more than 15 years, said he did not have the combination to the safe and believed it to be just another item to turn around.

"I thought it was empty," he said. "I shook it and I didn't feel anything inside of it, so I figured, well, maybe it's just a locked safe, you know. So I put it on eBay."

Labrecque lives in California. The person who bought the safe lives in Bartlett. Upon receipt, the buyer brought the safe to a welder, who cut it open.

Inside the safe was $26,000 in cash.

The buyer gave Labrecque a positive review and shared the news.

"I feel like the stupidest idiot in the world," said Labrecque. "I told my friend, I won the stupidest idiot in the world award the other day, you know. I gave away a safe with $26,000 in it."

In a contentious e-mail chain Labrecque provided to Action News 5, he asked for a cut of the cash. The buyer declined, citing Labrecque's seller policy that states, "What you see is what you get, no returns, and no money back."

Labrecque said this is different.

"That's a chunk of change, you know. That's life-altering money," he said. "I mean, if I was in that situation and I found that kind of money and I bought it from someone, I'd say, 'Here man, I found this money. I'll give you half of it.'"

Action News 5 tried to track down the buyer, but has not yet made contact.

Lmao wow, that'd be incredible to bid on a safe and find out the previous owner is a derp and forgot to take his money out.

lol BS he would send him half of it, I definitely wouldn't sell any type of lock box or safe without knowing what is inside of it.

There's no way, that if a locked safe came into my possession, I'd let it go without getting it open first.. Even if I wasn't expecting much, I'd just be too curious. Plus, you know, it's a safe, people put valuable **** in them.

I think it's hilarious that the seller thinks he's entitled to a cut of the cash.

Ah Ha.

I wanted to buy a safe last month....I should have kept looking instead of giving up.

is 26K really life altering? Really? For most people in the USA thats a new car. Big deal. Life altering is getting your ass of the couch and to a gym more often. That money would probably be blown on frivolous junk anyways.

Dont pretend its life altering.

Life Altering is a relative term.

Uh, yeah, if I had $26k out of the blue, that would be pretty life altering for me. o_o

Sucks for the guy selling it, but he definitely doesn't deserve a cut of it... can't believe he didn't even try to get it opened xD

I love how he's making the buyer out to be some arse for not giving him some of the money. I honestly doubt that this guy would give up half if he was the buyer. I mean, you admit that you were stupid, now you gotta deal with it.

I'd say that 26k is life altering for many people. A new car for a person who before couldn't even dream of being able to afford one at the moment is life altering for sure.

Exactly. Sucks to be the seller, but he eff'd up so he should deal with. Not make the other guy out to be a douche. Who sells a safe without opening it anyways?! Like... imagine the possibilities O_o
