GF Upgrade Scheduled - March 3, 2012

We will finally be upgrading to vB4 and the plan is to do it on Monday. The look will completely change since we will not be able to use any of our current themes with the new version. The forum may go down for maintenance for the entire day, I have never done an upgrade this big so I can't say how long it will take.

What can you expect after the upgrade?


The forum will look different.

The GFP system will be completely redone.

The GF Image Host and GF Bank will be removed as mentioned a few months ago

The Casino will be reinstalled as well.

Awards will be temporarily disabled.


If you have any questions about the upgrade, feel free to ask in this thread. I will be in the GF IRC Channel on Monday to take any questions then (if I'm looking).

You won't have 0 GFP, but it's being rebooted so that people don't have exorbitant amounts (like Linux ~_~) :P

I'm not positive on the details, though.

You can use your profile's album to host images. That's the main reason why we've shut down the image host - the creator of the mod stopped support for it when the albums came out, and the mod won't work on vb4 anyway.

I'm not positive on the details, though.

I was planning on disabling it completely for about a week or so and then working on an algorithm to give a calculated GFP to people that are still active (who requests it).

That's the plan. Will see how things go tomorrow.

I think she means is the GFP inside the bank going to removed from the bank and placed on the person or just deleted entirely. But I think you pretty much answered for yourself after she posted about creating a system where wealth redistribution of gfp would take place in a sort of start over mode in the gfp ecosystem. <watchlemonpostedasimpostingthis>

I started the process today but have run into complications. I may do this over the week but it may not happen today at all. Almost blew up the forum and had a heart attack from doing so.

It'd be handy to have a back up forum where you could test everything before hand before updating the main forum.

Not sure what resources you would need for websites, but with servers for games, before I installed a new mod or update, I'd install it on a private server or a server ran from my computer before trying it on the main one so the main server wouldn't be down. I'm assuming it'd cost for the extra stuff to do that for websites or forums though.

I was in the process of actually making a copy of the forum in a subdirectory, but before I do that, I need to clean things up so that the update process is easier. The first clean up process (before copying the forum) is where it went wrong today.

I won't be upgrading this forum directly because it would be so much harder to revert back if things go wrong. I always do it on a copy of the forum and if it goes ok on the copy, I just switch things over.

Since the clean up didn't go as I planned and since I go back to work in the morning, I will try to get this done by Saturday. Going to see if I can make a copy of the forum as it is right now and attempt an upgrade in the next few days. But right now, I'm officially moving the upgrade date to Feb 25th.

The Christmas and Silver & Red themes were removed since they are pretty outdated and will not work with the latest version of vb4 at all. Dark GF and BlueWorld will provide us with some functionality but they will also be eventually removed after the upgrade to be replaced with a brand new theme.

The arcade may also change - the scores and other stats may be removed after the upgrade because it looks like that we may have to convert to another arcade software. This part is still not confirmed.

Looks like we may not have an arcade after tomorrows update, at least for a little bit. The updated version of the arcade has an exploit, I need to wait for it to clear up before I put it back up.

The upgrade is still planned for tomorrow. If you upload any avatars, picture albums, etc. overnight, they WILL not be moved over to the upgraded version. I'm using a copy that I just made now and if your file isn't there before this post, it won't be there after the upgrade.

I finally went through the upgrade process, but unfortunately, the upgraded version was full of a ton of errors. I did not switch this forum to the upgraded one on purpose, it will take me some time to get rid of all the errors. But once I do, I'll redo the upgrade (since I have that process down).

You should still continue have GF Image Host becuase I want the pictures I upload before stay in forever, becuase it will be such a pain to change all the URL over again and reupload it.

The image will stay there in the same URL, we won't be deleting the images people uploaded, but the service itself (of uploading and removing the images) will be gone. You should use your profile's album for any pictures you want to upload. It's easier and far less buggy.
