In Mass Effect games when you move saved files, do you use the same char?

I have Mass Effect 1 and 2 on STEAM and just got 3 on Gamefly (steam doesnt have it)

i have been told its possible to use the save file on each game.

How does it work.

When you start a game it asks you if you want to import a character from Me/Me2.
