Article: PlayStation News: CVG sources: Sony to abandon DualShock design for PS4 - ComputerAndVideoGames.com (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/387287/cvg-sources-sony-to-abandon-dualshock-design-for-ps4/)

The new PS4 controller design, which remains a closely guarded secret across the PlayStation organisation, is expected to break new mould for Sony. The biometric tech, in particular, is something games studios such as Valve are interested in due to its function as a heart beat sensor.

It's about time they change the controller, it's been the same thing since the original play station in 1998. Will be interesting to see what they release, hopefully we'll see it at E3. Also looks like next gen's big thing is going to be biometric controllers. Which will be nice, when going to friends houses. You'll be able to save games to the controller an take them to friends houses and play.

The heart beat sensor would be cool too if they could get it to work with the games correctly.

These are rumors btw, but the article says multiple reliable sources have said that it's not going to be dual shock controller.

Edit: New Info

Second Article: The PlayStation 4 Has A New Controller, Fancy User Accounts And Impressive Specs (So Far) (http://kotaku.com/5977849/the-playstation-4-has-a-new-controller-fancy-user-accounts-and-impressive-specs-so-far)

PS4 Specs:

System Memory: 8GB
Video Memory: 2.2 GB
CPU: 4x Dual-Core AMD64 "Bulldozer" (so, 8x cores)
GPU: AMD R10xx
Ports: 4x USB 3.0, 2x Ethernet
Drive: Blu-Ray
HDD: 160GB
Audio Output: HDMI & Optical, 2.0, 5.1 & 7.1 channels

To sum up the article. Basically, right now the PS4 is being called Orbis, it won't be the official release name, but that's what Sony is calling it while it's in development. The name seems to have something to do with the PS Vita, so it's likely that the two will be more compatible.

More information on the controller, it seems that Sony has said that will be releasing the same design of the Dual Shock type controller with 2 analog sticks ect. However the dual shock controller is supposed to have a few new features. Biometric data is one of them which is explained above. It will also have a touch pad like you find on the back of a Vita (presumably it's also on the back of the PS4's controller), that can recognise two-point multi-touch. The entire pad can also be "clicked" for an additional input button.

As well with the new dual shock controller, they're making a new controller based on the wii remote wand, no other information is released on it yet, so it's most likely just an idea for now.

This is kind of how the Biometric controllers work:
http://img.gawkerassets.com/post/9/2013/01/orbispsn.jpg

That's it for now. Remember, none of this information is confirmed, and even the information that is locked down in January 2013 may change before the console's eventual release, which is likely not for at least another nine months, at minimum.

A good view of the controller:

Dont fix wasnt isnt broken, the design was a problem and they added those to it over the years. It's like changing the 360 design. All they need to do is get a better Dpad for Xbox 3. I'll wait and see, there is rumbling that Sony might jump E3 with a ps4 news launch, it'll be interesting if they do that. I can with near certainty believe that Microsoft and both Sony will be make some sort of splash at e3. Both are down yoy and any smart business man doesnt wait till his product is dead to release your next iteration.

I'd announce it before E3 then rather than waste time discussing the console I'd show off what it can do and what will be available at launch. Those press conferences are only so long. Less talking, more gaming. A new controller for either console would be interesting, but both work so well (despite minor flaws) I do not see why either should change them too dramatically.

I am pretty disappointed with PlayStation right now, if most of these rumors are true I may switch to a full time PC gamer.

Just update original post with new information, definitely sounds a lot better than the original news that was posted about the console and controllers.

There's a reason Sony hasn't changed the controllers in so many years. If it's not broke don't, fix it. Which is the same reason Microsoft is always changing the Xbox controllers :P

I haven't heard any news about a new xbox controller? Or are you talking about older ones, because they're pretty similar, they just made a little smaller and removed a few buttons.

Oh no, I just mean the progression over time. Like if you look at:

Microsoft seems to change their controllers every time. But Sony seems to stick to the same thing. Overall, I def prefer Playstation controllers though. The Xbox controllers are honestly the one reason I don't own an Xbox :/

First 3 aren't even xbox lol, they're some odd PC joystick. When I had a PS2 and not an Xbox, I didn't like the big size either, but once I got a 360 I like it a lot better. It fits my hands better than the PS3 controller, on the ps3 my fingers touch in the back, xbox 360, they wrap nicely around the handles. It's all just personal preference

Mizel
01-25-2013, 11:35 AM
Yea, they're just Microsoft controllers lol But yea, to each his own. I think what I don't like is more where the pad and joystick are on the Xobox controller. If they just switched those, I'd be much happier lol

I really hate the trigger buttons on the Xbox, but I don't mind the rest of the controller. And also...I really wanted the PS3 "boomerang" controller but nobody else liked it :\

rumor

Sources close to the hardware have revealed to us that PS4 will ship with a redesigned controller which is the same size as an existing DualShock but features a small touchpad in place of the existing Select, Start and PS buttons. The tech is based on Vita’s rear touchpad, and is similarly responsive in use.

A new Share button on the controller will, when pressed, launch a new feature that will allow screenshots and video to be distributed online. The PS4 hardware will continually record the most recent 15 minutes of onscreen action (with no processing penalty, claims our source), which users will then be able to edit and broadcast via the Internet.

That wouldnt be so bad

I really hope they don't change the controller too much, I've been a Sony fanboy since I moved over from Nintendo, I really fell in love with the DualShock design. It would be a shame to change everything that's worked for so long.. It's sad, but this might be a console mover for me :/

Mizel
02-07-2013, 07:40 AM
I still wouldn't move consoles lol Really it's between Xbox and PS... and honestly, no matter how much they change the PS controller... it still can't be worse than Xbox's :P

BlackEyedJester

That's true, But I've gotten into PC gaming recently (High end Laptop and all) So, what I meant by Console mover, is converting fully into a PC Gamer, though that thought frightens me..

Mizel

Yeah the orignal controllers they just shrank and moved buttons. Then they moved the black/white to be bumpers on the 360 controller. A lot comfier.

I really hate the trigger buttons on the Xbox, but I don't mind the rest of the controller.

It's the only reason I don't play PS3 so much. I can't stand the triggers, it feels like they're gonna fall off when I'm pulling the triggers. And when I watch movies and set the controller down it always forwards or rewinds D: But I love the PS3 d-pad. Everyone need to learn from them.

But...the xbox is the same as the PS3, just swap the d-pad and left stick around D: Actually there's a controller out where you can do just that. You can also pop off the triggers, and replace them with P3 or Xbox whichever you like. They make them for Xbox, and PS3. Just a heads up if there's any 360 exclusives you want to play in the future. I was gonna buy one for PS3 (prefer the feel of 360 controller better) but they were sold out where I live.

It's big and bulky and not as comfy in my hands. And the Dpad and the stick switched annoys me too. I've just never been able to get used to the controller and prefer the ps3 by far. Im sure if ALL I had was an Xbox, I'd get used to it.

I use a PS3 controller (I have a PS3 as well) for 1 game on my PC and it happens to be Dark Souls. The only reason is I don't have a corded xbox controller, and the PS3 controls connect with Bluetooth.

Anyone that has played dark souls for PC knows that mouse and keyboard is not an option.

Trunks

Well they make most games for consoles then transfer them to PC. So naturally, it's going to be better with a controller.

and yes, game is beyond hard. No difficulty option, just balls to the wall getting crapped on for days.

Yeah it's hard to say. With the Wii U they can do pretty much anything. With this guy though, maybe like a health bar? Not much wiggle room, shoulda just left it out imo :S

Trunks

Health, bar. I rather not have to look away from the screen to see my health lol. Maybe it'll just show the battery power left in the controller, along with maybe the time and other little things. That would be my guess.

I actually saw a really cool fan gif of one possibility of the screen... it was a touch screen with all PS home's options on it (like the PS home button, video, game, etc). I actually really liked that idea.

So new Sony release today. PS4 controller has the touch pad which we knew. A share button. It took the trigger design from Microsoft, which is a big improvement, gives the user more controller. Also thumb sticks are now concave down like the xbox, allows for better grip and more comfortable. Another improvement I think. Lastly the LED screen is actually a light bar. It'll be used as a sensor bar for some games, tilting the controller I suspect will effect your character in the game.

Sony new features are:

Triggers
Share Button
Touch Pad
Concave down analog sticks
Lightbar

IMO all good improvements, really impressed with Sony this year.

Gotta say, kind of ironic that you guys were saying how Microsoft copied Sony's design and here they are taking two design features from the 360 controller :p

Mizel
02-21-2013, 09:12 AM
Wait... who was saying that Microsoft copied Sony?? Lol That's the dumbest thing Ive ever heard xD Controllers have pretty much followed generally the same form since the NES. (Generally meaning mostly the same layout/basic design, not style/shape completely)). And the Xbox controller and PS controller have obvious differences...

However, I'm liking the new controller. It really isn't that much different than the old one in terms of style/shape. I'm really glad they didn't try and turn the new controller into the uncomfy bulkiness that is the Xbox controller though :)

It's hard to make your own controller with everyone going "Make it more like the other one, it's comfier!" Then when you do everyone screams "LOLRIPOFF" There's pretty much only one comfy layout that works for everyone, and everyone has it now.

I'm actually kinda hoping that the PS4 controller is a little bigger, so I can actually hold it lmao. All you tiny handed people have had access to those games for too long now! Need to share with us D:

Well the 360, PS3, and the Wii-Pro are all pretty much the same, aside from a couple buttons moved here and there. It's hard to break out of the mold and make something fresh. Nintendo keeps trying and failing, and I think Sony/Msoft see that and go "Why bother?"

Improving is sometimes better than re-creating anyways. I'm not gonna be complaining too much, I'm just waiting to see who's got better exlusives in the next year or so.

Also, it's confirmed that PS4 will bundle a headset with the system on the release. Same style as 360, it'll plug into the headphone jack on the bottom of the controller.
