Recommendation on OUYA system

I need help! My fiancé is a gamer and plans to pursue game development. I know nothing about gaming or this industry. I was looking around online and found that the Ouya gaming system allows budding developers to practice and play around with it. Can anyone recommend this for me or another option that would be better?

I can't say much in regards to the Ouya but I would imagine familiarizing oneself with the programming languages commonly used for game development would be a good way to go. Being able to code would broaden options too in the event game development didn't pan out. The language might change (probably will) but the concepts of programming generally stay the same. I've never really dabbled in game development but I'd be willing to bet there are some open source engines out there that can be used to develop that skill. Would probably need a fairly robust PC system. That would be my guess.
