In the Age of Empires 3 campaign mode, you play as a character known as Morgan Black. Then later you play as his grandson. During all of this Morgan Blacks great grand daughter is acting as the narrator ( Sounds confusing yea? ). The game takes place during the Colonial era which is from the 1500's to the 1800's .

Story Line
When I first put the game in I thought it was just going to be another Age of Empires with an almost non existent story line. I was amazed when I entered Campaign mode and saw cut scenes. It is still basically a “Defend the Fort” type game like the other ones, but it was soothing to see some type of story after finishing a level.

I give the Story Line a 8/10

Game Play
There are 3 acts in the game; they all involve about 7 or 8 levels. When I hit the second act, I started to get bored. Though, there are some new features in the game that it makes it a little more exciting. They added a Home City to the game that you can design some part of the city. This isn't the only thing that it is for. At your Home City you can buy new supplies with the gold that you mine. Also technology advances to upgrade your economy. You still have the all famous Skirmish. This is where you make a custom game and fight to the death with up to 8 different tribes. I found my self playing this more often than campaign mode.

I give the game play a 8.5/10

Graphics
The graphics in this game are amazing. The grass and trees are well designed. They move with the wind, which gives a realistic effect to the game. Even the water is well done. You can see shadows from the trees and the cliffs in the water. What I always think is fun to watch is ship battles. When you fire your cannon it puts holes in the boat. Basically everything looks really well, except for the textures on people. From the above view theirs heads look all gray from there helmets. Then the body is almost all blue. I don't see why they didn't put in any effort into making the people look nice.

I give the graphics a 9.5/10

Other Notes
The game is pretty fun if you don't play it constantly. Just take breaks every act, if you are playing the campaign. The online play is also pretty fun. A whole lot harder though. If you have beaten the game and you’re tired of playing a Skirmish, try going online and playing there.

Overall I give this game a 9/10

It came out on Oct 18, 2005. There was also two expansions, Age of Empires III: The WarChiefs came out oct 17 2006, Age of Empires III: The Asian Dynasties oct 23, 2007.

I think that game is actually a RPG and a strategy game. I looked it up before I posted it and it was under both.

its a great review and good post posting pics and AoE games are generally more of a Strategy game than RPG - it is true they put it in the "rpg" section because you play as a civilization but as the leader of the civilization you are using strategies to take over the others and win the game - it is considered to be more strategy than role playing

good review nonetheless

i went to look for my AoE III Cd today - couldn't find it :( dont know where i put it, found my Civ IV cd though, and i know i had AoE III because I played it on my old pc

That is a good review. I am a bit of a fan of the AOE series. I have all the games, but I dont have any of the expansion packs.

i have all the expansions of AOE II, none for the first one and i can't even find my third one

expansions aren't too different, just minor differences here and there like who you can be and even weapons and units you can build

I dont like AOE. I prefer strategy games on the PC that don't have a story. Games where your fee to do whatever you want.

That is what Skirmish mode is for.
