In Irish mythology, the Badb (/baðβ/ "crow" in Old Irish; modern Irish Badhbh /bəiv/ means "vulture") was a goddess of war who took the form of a crow, and was thus sometimes known as Badb Catha (battle crow). She often caused confusion among soldiers to move the tide of battle to her favored side. Boa Island is named for this goddess.
Battlefields were called the land of the Badb, and were often said to include the Badb taking part as a crow or as a wolf. The Badb is associated with the beansidhe, and is said to have been crucial in the battle against the Fomorians.
Badbs were also sacrificial victims. In The Destruction of Da Derga's Hostel, among the hostel's rooms and their inhabitants spied out by Lomna Druth son of Donn Desa, who reports to Fer rogain, after the rooms of Conaire Mor's equerries and judges and conjurors and lampoon-singers, came the Room of the Badbs:

With her sisters, Macha and the Morr*gan, she was part of a trio of war goddesses who were the daughters of the mother goddess, Ernmas. According to Seathrún Céitinn Badb was worshipped by Ériu, with whom she may be seen as equivalent. She is sometimes the wife of Neit, and may be equivalent with Nemain, Neit's more usual wife. However, Nemain and Badb are said to have had different fathers which is an argument for their separateness as personages: Badb is described as one of the three daughters of Delbaeth son of Neid whereas Nemain is said to have been the daughter of Elcmar of the Brugh (Newgrange, near the Boyne), who was the son of Delbaeth, son of Ogma, son of Elatan [1].
Likely, she is related to the Gaulish deity Catubodua, known from an inscription in Haute Savoie in eastern France.
The Badb is not to be confused with Bodb, a male deity.

Julius Pokorny (12 June 1887 – 8 April 1970) was a scholar of the Celtic languages, particularly Irish, and a supporter of Irish nationalism. He was born in Prague, Austria–Hungary and studied at the University of Vienna, where he also taught from 1913 to 1920. From 1920 to 1935, he held the chair of Celtic philology at Friedrich Wilhelm University in Berlin, before the Nazis discovered that, in spite of being a German nationalist, he was of Jewish descent.
He was the editor of the important journal Zeitschrift für celtische Philologie before World War II, and was responsible for reviving it afterwards.
He emigrated to Switzerland in 1943, where he taught for a few years at the University of Berne and at the University of Zürich until his retirement in 1959. In 1954, he received an honorary professorship at Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich, where he taught part-time in 1956 and again from 1960 to 1965. He is the author of the Indogermanisches Etymologisches Wörterbuch (Indo-European Etymological Dictionary; 1959) which is still widely used today. He died in Zürich in 1970 almost three weeks after being hit by a tram not far from his home.

The city of Berne or Bern (German: Bern (help·info) [b̥ɛrn], French: Berne [bɛʀn], Italian: Berna [ˈbɛrna], Romansh: Berna [ˈbɛrnə], Bernese German: Bärn [b̥æːrn]) is the Bundesstadt (federal city, de facto capital) of Switzerland and, with 128,041 people (agglomeration: 344,000), the fifth most populous city in Switzerland (after Zürich, Geneva, Basel and Lausanne).
Most of Berne's residents speak German, or more specifically, Bernese German, which is a high-Alemannic dialect. Very few people still speak the Mattenenglisch[citation needed], a language game used in the former workers' quarter of Matte, but several words have found their way into Bernese German.
Berne also functions as the capital of the Canton of Berne, the second most populous of Switzerland's cantons.
Illustrious Bernese include the reformer Albrecht von Haller, the poet Albert Bitzius and the painters Hans Fries, Ferdinand Hodler and Paul Klee. The German-born physicist Albert Einstein worked out his theory of relativity while employed as a clerk at the Berne patent office. A culturally important person was Mani Matter, a songwriter performing in Bernese German.
I remember Bern from city. iirc something about rebuilding it after a fire....actually my memory fails me I don't it has to do with fire now that I think of it.

The Boeing YAL-1 Airborne Laser (ABL) weapons system is a megawatt-class chemical oxygen iodine laser (COIL) mounted inside a modified Boeing 747-400F. It is primarily designed to destroy tactical ballistic missiles (TBMs), similar to the Scud, while in boost phase. The low-power lasers have been test-fired in flight, aimed at an airborne target board.[1] The aircraft was designated YAL-1A in 2004 by the U.S. Department of Defense.[2] The Airborne Laser Laboratory, a less-powerful prototype installed in a Boeing NKC-135A, shot down several missiles in the 1980s.

The Chumash are Native American people who historically inhabit chiefly central and southern coastal regions of California, in portions of what is now San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Ventura and Los Angeles counties, extending from Morro Bay in the north to Malibu in the south. They also occupied three of the Channel Islands: Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa and San Miguel; the smaller island of Anacapa was uninhabited. Modern place names with Chumash origins include Malibu, Lompoc, Ojai, Point Mugu, Piru, Lake Castaic, and Simi Valley.

Estimates of the Native Californian population have varied substantially, both with respect to California's pre-contact count and for changes during subsequent periods. Pre-contact estimates range from 133,000 to 705,000 with some recent scholars concluding that these estimates are low. Following the European people's arrival into California, disease, massacres, and other factors brought the population as low as 25,000. It is estimated that some 4,500 Native Californians suffered violent deaths between 1849 and 1870.[1] As of 2005, California is the state with the largest self-identified Native American population according to the U.S. Census at 696,600 (U.S. Census 2006).

Is the end of the venerable computer mouse at hand? Analyst firm Gartner seems to think so, and says its case is bolstered by the meteoric rise of technologies found in, and made popular by, Nintendo's Wii controller and the Apple iPhone. Piling on is the slowly maturing field of facial recognition technology, which companies like Panasonic are now testing in the home electronics field. It's a combination that does not bode well for the mouse, said Gartner analyst Steven Prentice, which saw its beginnings at the hands of Douglas Engelbart at the Stanford Research Institute in 1963. One caveat worth noting in all this peripheral doom-and-gloom is that the keyboard is here to stay. PC FPS fans can rejoice at their convenience.

ROSEMONT, Ill. - Steve Bartman refused yet another offer to cash in on his infamy following his interference with a foul ball in the Chicago Cubs’ 2003 playoff loss to the Florida Marlins.
Bartman’s friend Frank Murtha said the infamous fan won’t accept an offer of $25,000 to attend the National Sports Collectors Convention and autograph a photograph of him tipping a foul ball. The ball seemed destined for Cubs outfielder Moises Alou’s glove during the critical game.
Bartman was vilified by Cubs fans, who thought he helped prevent the team from reaching the World Series for the first tome since 1945. Alou has since said he wouldn’t have caught the ball.

The Drake Landing Solar Community is the first solar powered community of North America. Located in the town of Okotoks, Alberta, Canada, the project sets a wonderful example of how every household can lead a sustainable lifestyle. There are 800 solar panels located throughout the community on garage roofs, and they produce 1.5 mega-watts of thermal power during a summer day and supply heat to the district heating system. The whole system meets 90% of the annual heating and hot water needs of the homes.

The 52-home solar community has installed an array of solar panels on the roofs of their houses and garages. Glycol solution runs through an insulated piping system, or collector loop, that connects the array of solar panels. The solar panels absorb the solar energy during the daytime and heat the glycol solution. The glycol solution travels through the collector loop and reaches an underground heat exchanger within the community’s centralized Energy Center. The heat is then transferred from heat exchanger to the water stored in a short-term storage tank. The glycol solution returns to the solar collector system. The Energy Center has short-term thermal storage tanks and long-thermal storage tanks (Borehole Thermal Energy Storage (BTES) system).
During the warmer months the heated water is transferred to the underground borehole thermal energy storage (BTES) system via a series of pipes. The water heats up the surrounding earth increasing the temperature to 80 degrees C (176 °F). The water returns to the short-term storage tanks to be heated again. The heat is stored underground insulated with sand, high-density R-40 insulation, a waterproof membrane, clay, and other landscaping materials. The stored heat is used to provide heat and hot water to the entire community throughout the winter.
The homes are moderately sized, ranging from 1,492 to 1,664 square feet, and have low energy demands, suitable to work with the system. The homes are located close to one another, which provides a walkable neighborhood, and reduces the lengths that the fluid for the solar heating system needs to travel. Water conservation has been made mandatory in the homes. The homes have been built using locally manufactured materials, and recycled material too has been used in construction. The homes will be certified to Natural Resources Canada’s R-2000 Standard for energy efficiency, and the Built Green™ Alberta program. The precedence set by the Drake Landing Solar Community can serve as an example for every community.

WASHINGTON - Strolling beside the Reflecting Pool with the Lincoln Memorial in the distance, it's easy to overlook a gentle rise in the landscape a few yards to the north.
The small berm is part of an inconspicuous levee system designed to protect world-famous museums, the National Archives and federal office buildings from flooding.
But the nearly 70-year-old levee is at risk of failing during a major storm — a catastrophe that could swamp portions of downtown in up to 10 feet of water and cause $200 million in damages, according to federal officials.
Dozens of communities coast to coast are facing similar warnings as authorities re-examine the nation's outdated flood-control infrastructure.
"We have built a series of structures and walked away from them historically," said Leonard Shabman, a water resources expert with the think tank Resources for the Future. "If you've got potholes in the road, people go out and fix them; that's not the case with levees."
In Washington, the problem has received heightened urgency given the threat to important real estate in a flood zone that begins near the base of the Washington Monument and stretches to a neighborhood south of the Capitol. The area includes the White House visitor center, National Gallery of Art, the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum and Justice Department headquarters.
Built on reclaimed swamp land with few natural barriers against high water, Washington always has been vulnerable to flooding. And experts say the threat is worsening.
The sea level has risen about 2 feet since the city was founded more than 200 years ago at the confluence of the Anacostia and Potomac rivers, said James Titus, a sea-level expert at the Environmental Protection Agency. In addition, urban development has increased rainwater runoff, and global warming is believed to have fueled more potent storms.
Congress attempted to address the problem in the 1930s, authorizing the Army Corps of Engineers to build a levee between the Lincoln Memorial and Washington Monument with dirt removed for the Reflecting Pool. But gaps were left where several roads slice through the barrier.
For years, using sandbags to plug the holes during the threat of high water was considered acceptable. But the Corps toughened its standards after Hurricane Katrina breached New Orleans' levees in 2005.
In 2006, the Corps cited deficiencies with 122 of the 2,000 levees in a federal rehabilitation program, pointing out problems such as erosion and the movement of floodwalls. Three of the levees were in Washington, including the Potomac Park levee near the Reflecting Pool.
Since that report, Congress has authorized the Corps to inventory all private levees to better understand the nation's flood risks. Officials say the exact number of those levees is unknown.
As the Corps finds problems with a particular levee, it notifies the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which is in the process of updating the government's flood maps. If the levees are deficient, FEMA redraws the maps as if there's no protection.
"We need to educate people about risks they face," said Butch Kinerney, a spokesman for FEMA's National Flood Insurance Program. "Catastrophic floods are really sobering for all of us."
Federal officials estimate it will cost billions to make sure levees are strong enough to withstand a 100-year flood. Otherwise, nearby homeowners could face mandatory flood insurance and developers will have to comply with stricter building codes.
New maps in Washington would lead to the review of projects such as the construction of the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture, which would be partly in the new flood zone.
"Regardless of what FEMA does, we recognize that we have to handle the water issue," said Lonnie Bunch, the museum's director.
FEMA recently agreed to rescind new flood maps for Washington after officials pledged to build an improved flood control system by November 2009. But the maps could be reinstated if the city falls short, said D.C. Office of Planning Director Harriet Tregoning.
The district is committing $2.5 million for interim fixes, but more money likely will be needed to implement a permanent solution.
"It's going to be a lot of work in a short amount of time," said Michelle Desiderio, a planner with the National Capital Planning Commission.
Desiderio wrote a report about the threat of flooding in Washington after heavy rains in 2006 damaged several downtown office buildings, closing the Internal Revenue Service headquarters for nearly six months. Though that flooding wasn't caused by a breached levee, it highlighted the vulnerability of the city's low-lying areas.
During six previous floods, officials placed sandbags on 17th Street, which cuts across the National Mall near the Washington Monument. Had there been more serious flooding, plans called for erecting an 8-foot earthen embankment with dirt taken from the grounds of the Washington Monument, said Steve Garbarino, the Corps' project manager for flood protection in the Washington region.
"That's the biggest concern — the amount of time it would take," Garbarino said.
The promised improvements include a post-and-panel barrier, which would involve placing vertical beams in the road to support metal panels that would slide in to form a wall. Other possibilities include using an inflatable dam or raising the level of 17th Street.
A key challenge for officials is not intruding on the landscape that makes the Mall so iconic for millions of Americans.
"Much of the discussion around levees have been on the engineering side," Desiderio said. "Yet it's incumbent upon us, since it's on the National Mall, for it to be a beautiful system."
Washington to get pwned by global warming.

The Vega Brothers (also known as Double V Vega) is the title of an abandoned film project that was to be written and directed by Quentin Tarantino. According to recent interviews, Tarantino does not plan to proceed with the project. It would have starred Michael Madsen and John Travolta reprising the roles of Vic (Mr. Blonde) from Reservoir Dogs, and Vincent from Pulp Fiction, respectively.
"It's a sequel to both Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs, actually, it's a sequel and it's a prequel. It's the Vega Brothers, played by Michael Madsen and John Travolta. I have been trying to do it for years, and the more time I take, the older these two guys get. But I've come up with an idea that won't much matter how much they age... the magic of movies. It's going to be great. It'll be funny, and these guys are so great, alright, they're going to be like two oversized mob-men fighting over the last bowl of pasta, that we can't go wrong. It's just going to be John and Michael, and I hope to make this my next movie. We're laying down the pipework for it now."

On April 3, 2007 Quentin Tarantino appeared on the Opie & Anthony show to promote Grindhouse and during the interview, "The Vega Brothers" movie was brought up. Tarantino stated that it's "looking unlikely" and that he probably will not make the film because "everyone is older now" [2]; however, he did announce that the prequel would have been called "Double V Vega" and the story would have been about Vincent Vega's time in Amsterdam, running one of Marsellus Wallace's clubs, and Vic visiting him. Tarantino did say he had another idea about how to work around the actors being a little older and the characters being dead, the idea being that Vic and Vincent had older brothers.
:crys:, the movie would have been so good too.

Riverside Elementary School was first opened in Wichita, Kansas in 1889 as a one room school. It operated until 1892 at which time it was closed for a year. However, in 1893 the school was reopened and Riverside has been in session every year since then. The school has been housed in four locations throughout Wichita. The current building at 1001 Porter was opened in 1910. Enrollment hit an all time high in the late 1950s with 505 students. Where did they put them all? Enrollment remained high through the mid 1950s but a steady decline in enrollment began later in that same decade.
In 1990, with an enrollment of less than 170 students, Riverside was faced with a dilemma: be merged with another school, be closed altogether or find a way to bring more students into the building. A committee of proactive parents was formed by the PTO to look into alternative choices for the school. After much discussion, the committee endorsed making Riverside a magnet school. Due to the location of the school, the committee suggested a magnet focus of cultural arts and history which would take advantage of the proximity of area museums. In addition to the Wichita Art Museum, the Mid-America All Indian Center, Botanica, Cowtown, Wichita Historical Museum, the Wichita Omnisphere, Wichita Children's Museum and Exploration Place, are all within a short distance of the school. The idea was approved by the neighborhood, PTO and the Board of Education.
Riverside opened the 1991 school year with a new name: Riverside Cultural Arts and History Magnet School. In addition to a new name, an innovative method of educating children was embraced which enabled them to learn in an integrated, thematic fashion which prioritized hands-on experiences. Enrollment jumped the first year to over 280 students. Due to its innovative approach to education, enrollment continued to increase and now averages about 320 students each year. Riverside is looking forward to continuing its role as the longest operating campus in Wichita.

Wichita (pronounced /ˈwɪtʃɪtaː/), also known as the Air Capital of the World, is the largest city in the U.S. state of Kansas, as well as a major aircraft manufacturing hub and cultural center. In July of 2006, CNN/Money and Money magazine ranked Wichita ninth on its list of the 10 best big cities to live in the United States. The city is home to six major aircraft manufacturing companies and McConnell Air Force Base. Wichita is located in South Central Kansas on the Arkansas River, and is the county seat of Sedgwick County. It is also the home of a National Weather Service Forecast Office which serves portions of central, south-central, and southeast Kansas.
The city's population was 344,284 at the 2000 census, and it was estimated to be 357,698 in the year 2006,[3] making it the 50th largest city in the United States. The Wichita Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), which encompasses Sedgwick, Butler, Harvey, and Sumner counties, has a 2007 estimated population of 596,452 persons residing in 245,159 households, making it the 84th largest MSA in the United States. The Wichita-Winfield Combined Statistical Area also includes Cowley County and has an estimated population of 630,703. Nearby Reno County is not a part of the Wichita MSA or CSA, but the Census reported a population estimate of 63,832 in Reno County in 2003.

After the census was tabulated, Utah challenged the results in two different ways. Utah was extremely close to gaining a fourth congressional seat, falling 857 people short, which in turn was allocated to North Carolina. The Census Bureau counted members of the military and other federal civilian employees serving abroad as residents of their home state, but did not count other individuals living outside the United States. Utah claimed that individuals traveling abroad as religious missionaries should be counted as residents and that the failure to do so imposed a burden on Mormon religious practice. Almost half of all Mormon missionaries, more than 11,000 individuals, were from Utah; only 102 came from North Carolina. If this policy were changed, then Utah would have received an additional seat instead of North Carolina. On November 26, 2002, the Supreme Court affirmed the lower court ruling that rejected Utah's efforts to have Mormon missionaries counted.[3]
The state of Utah then filed another lawsuit alleging that the statistical methods used in computing the state populations were improper and cost Utah the seat. The Bureau uses a method called imputation to assign a number of residents to addresses where residents cannot be reached after multiple efforts. While nationwide the imputation method added .4% to the population, the rate in Utah was .2%. The state challenged that the use of imputation violates the Census Act of 1957 and that it also fails the Constitution's requirement in Article I, Section 2 that an "actual enumeration" be used for apportionment.[4] This case, Utah v. Evans, made it to the Supreme Court, but Utah was again defeated.[5]

March 19, 2004 — "The Nevada Gaming Commission Thursday reluctantly imposed an agreed-upon $1 million fine on The Venetian for rigging contests and violating state gaming regulations but only after chastising other state agencies for not pursuing the case more vigorously. Chairman Peter Bernhard and Commissioner Art Marshall, who called the violations the "most serious" they have dealt with during their tenures on the commission, criticized the state attorney general's office and the Gaming Control Board for taking a year to bring the eight-count complaint before the commission. ... "This is the most serious complaint I've seen since I've been on the commission. The issues go to the heart of the integrity of the industry," Bernhard said. ... The Asian high roller at the center of the case, who was also the big loser in the casino over the Chinese New Year weekend in 2002, was preselected to win a Mercedes-Benz. The complaint said a Venetian executive who rigged the drawing with a cohort hid the winning ticket in his shirtsleeve and pretended to draw it randomly from a batch of entries before announcing the "winning" ticket.
