No you can't play Online with silver. Silver is basically just being able to talk to your friends.

Did you know that you can make 4 xbl gold accounts per xbox? So if you didn't want to buy a month of gold you could just make a new tag and get a month free. Unless you are hardcore for your gamer score ask ppl on your friends list because 48hr and month gold come in new games. Just a thought
