View Full Version : Help Me LAG suxx
StevePresley

I am having problems playing a few games, either on or offline. I get lag for about 8-10 seconds then its ok for about 20 seconds, then back to lag. I have changed and updated bios, motherboard drivers, Nvidea drivers and Realtek drivers. The games are Need for Speed Underground, Need for Speed Pro Street, Combat Arms and Hot Rod Garage to Glory. Now whats strange is Halo plays fine, I can turn up the res and graphics ALL the way. But the others....gah !!! I'm even using a new beta driver from Nvidea. Perhaps I haven't thought of the obvious....and ANY ideas will be greatly appreciated !

your computer seems like it can hold the games but what hard drive do you have? it could be a hard drive corruption issue, I would say wipe the hard drive if it's a recent issue because it could be that the hard drive isn't storing the data properly or slows down when storing and sending saved data to the ram.
OR it can be a RAM issue, one ram card could be failing, this is probably more likely than the hard drive issue, i had that happen to me on my server before, had to replace one card.

those are two things I hadn't thought of....
Harddrive is a WesternDigital 140 gig
and I may try the ram change, since I have two extra stix that I don't have slots for. But this issue has been there since day one, I built this system back in May.

ah.
it could still be a ram issue even if its from day 1.
what's your power source and how much power does it have? could be that its not sending enough power to your mobo to run this all, there are a LOT of things that can go wrong but only a few easy ways to get it, usually with software testers and i have no idea where to get those for free...or paid actually lol, never looked it up before
StevePresley
09-06-2008, 10:43 AM
power source is 450 watts
tried new ram and the problem still exists
I may have to call in the GeekSquad sad 2 say
LiNuX
09-06-2008, 11:25 AM
wait you have a 450 watt power source for Geforce 8600GT and 2 gigs of ram? with a hard drive and probably an optical drive.
my guess right now is that you aren't sending enough power to your motherboard and its parts so it lags to get the power. Since it's with games, your graphics card may not be getting the power it needs.
I have the same GPU as you except its overclocked and I have a 700 watt Power source unit.
It's just a guess, i could be wrong, but the only way to know is to change the PSU to a higher wattage and see if it fixes, if it doesn't then I am wrong lol. Doubt you want to go and spend money on a new PSU
StevePresley
09-06-2008, 12:47 PM
well money isn't really an object here
cuz I want the games to work properly
(I HATE substandardness)
so if I spend $70 for a 650 watt PSU do ya think that'd be enough ?

650 watt should be good, you only have 2 ram cards in there right?
what brand is it? and model? you have to look at how much power they suck up, you can't really pick the "exact" wattage to use, you just have to guess based on the components you have.
and it only happens when you play games right?
and by the way, I MAY be wrong, so if you go through with this, don't come pointing fingers :) i only try to help as best as I can from my end without any first hand experience with your problems, I've faced these problems in the past and there is always more than one solution, i am just telling you what I think now
StevePresley
09-06-2008, 07:12 PM
nah I'd never point fingers, it isn't like a PSU is useless
to me it's an upgrade
so maybe I'll go 800 watts
just to be sure
arh arh ARH !! MORE POWER !!
LiNuX
09-06-2008, 07:21 PM
well 600 watts should do, i have a 550 watt psu in my server right now, requires a lot of power for the mobo and stuff and i am probably under utilizing it - 800 watt will be more than enough, later on you can add more powerful ram or even get a brand new motherboard, get the GeForce 9800gt gpu and everything :D
have fun upgrading and let us know if you have any more questions

if not, then I have a spare PSU

Thanx for all the help Linux !!

that sounds pretty good :D and yeah, i currently have no spare PSU's lol, just save that to build a cheap computer later and sell it on ebay or something lol, it'll work :D
and yeah, let me know if it works, if it doesn't i'll try to see what else it can be

crap...well first, sorry for the misguide but i just spoke from past experiences
second, it goes back to my ram issue, what ram cards do you have? a model number will be nice since i can look up the timing of it.
did you install the OS yourself? usually reinstalling the OS after wiping the hard drive solves a lot of problems but I can't say it'll solve this one - i fixed my little sister's computer by wiping the hdd and reinstalling xp but it had OS related issues so its a different problem than yours
but i'll try to do some research and see if i can find another fix to this

RAM is OCZ Technology
p/n:OCZ2N800SR2GK
PC2 6400
may have to reformat I suppose :(
LiNuX
09-09-2008, 09:57 PM
ram is good...reformatting isn't that bad lol, i do it every once in a while just to get a fresh start. The RAM is 2.2 volts each so they are power demanding and the new PSU could have helped out on that side, don't know why it isn't helping with the games

Reformatted.....no dice
removed video card GeForce8600GT and went with onboard GeForce6150SE
problem solved, plays fine. Now is that strange or what ???

very strange because no one can convince me the 6150 is better than the 8600gt...
maybe it was the gpu hardware not being able to read the graphics properly, but I haven't heard of many people with the 8600gt with the same problem as you. usually if there is a GPU problem, your whole graphics would be messed up, not just in games, but who knows...very weird indeed lol
I think since i love the 8600gt so much, I skipped that as being the problem subconsciously.
of course back then 8600gt was great when i got it, now its meh...9800gt is out and it rox

If u are still watching this thread Linux, I was wrong. Gameplay was fine for 5 minutes the BAM back to lag, or stuttering. People tell me I look like I am moonwalking. I been busy or I would have replied sooner.
I found this forum through a friend and maybe you can't help me with this. My problem is lag while gaming, either off or online. I expierience a slowdown for about 10 seconds, then it's fine for 10 seconds. I have reformatted 4 times, I have taken out my onboard sound, taken out my video card, taken out ALL windows updates, changed RAM sticks and changed power supplies.I have updated the BIOS and all drivers also. I ran the Spybot program and there are no issues, I ran a program called " Hijack This " and will post the results here.

wow...im stumped :( there isn't a lot of other things to my knowledge that can cause in game lag - the GPU, RAM, CPU, PSU - the major players here, you have a great processor so its not a problem there, otherwise your whole pc would lag, u said you chnaged ram, psu, and gpu
it can't be a hard drive issue or an OS issue because more would lag, definitely not a cd rom issue or motherboard...
i will try to see if i can find something on this because right now im scratching my head on this one.
and the friend that referred you probably got the help he/she needed lol, im usually good at that too, i just can't explain this one for some reason - but something tells me i must know the solution for the future

oO - that means it was disabled...happens when i plug in my ipod and click the eject button in itunes, says i can safely remove it
that's weird, never heard of a hard drive lagging in game and being fine everywhere else, if a hard drive lags, it lags everything, came with the processor. stuff like the graphics card and ram cards - they are worked more when programs are put to use, hard drives are just for storage, when ur running a program, it switches over to ram.
very weird problem..
